Introduction
Soil and Water Conservation Society, Nepal (SOWCOS) is a society of soil and water conservation professionals and was established in 1999. SOWCOS aims at providing an opportunity for the resource conservation professionals to bring together their experiences, expertise and efforts in order to promote the welfare of Nepalese people through sustainable management of watershed resources (specifically soil and water).
Since watershed management encompasses conservation and management of various resources, requiring multi-sectoral development. There are a number of agencies, government, non-government, academia that are engaged in conservation and management of watershed resources (soil, water, ecosystems). All these agencies and organizations work independently with their own compartmental perspectives in absence of common approach.
Many of the professionals of watershed management, soil and water conservation, forestry, natural resource management, civil engineering, geology, hydrology and meteorology, NRM economics, conservation education, geographical information system are affiliated with SOWCOS. SOWCOS is registered at Kathmandu District Administration Office with registered no 09/057/057 and its secretariat is located at Kathmandu Municipality Ward no 11 Babar Mahal. Currently there are 220 professionals in SOWCOS.
